Dear Prayer Partners and Supporters,

Thank you so much for your continuted faithful prayers and support!  Please continue to pray for the spring/summer activities in the province of Toledo: baptisms, Bible institute, open-air evangelism etc.  Pray especially for the areas surrounding the capitol of Toledo.  We are ministering in three areas presently.  The good news is that Mora is taking a big step forward and renting a place to move the services May 4th.  Joshua and Adriana will be taking the leadership of this work in progress.

The reason for writing this present email is to inform you of our coming mini-furlough October 15-March 31.  It is our desire to share in person the experiences, challenges and victories over the past two years.  It has been our goal to report to our supporting churches at least once every four years.  If we have not been in your church recently, you are a priority.  Please write us and let us know when it would best for us to fit into your schedule.

Sincerely yours for souls around the world,

Larry & Jane Parks

A Peek into the heart and life of a missionary...
In Spanish culture there is a real fear of "what people might say". The act of focusing on the approval of folks around you is rooted deeply. I suppose the approval of our peers is common to human nature, and at certain levels is a factor in thwarting evil. On the other hand in I Samuel 15:24, Saul confesses his sin saying, "I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice."

For years on my computer I have had the framed words of B.J. Hoff,
"It matters not if the world has heard
Or approves or understands...
The only applause we're meant to seek
Is that of the nail-scarred hands.

As missionaries the concept of our focus has a least two implications. First of all as Christian leaders, we should listen to our group of believers(at home and abroad)filtering the recommendations and choices through the Word and prayer. The cultural context of some well-meaning people has been limited to earthly conduct and/or national ethics without taking into consideration the Biblical viewpoint. Mores, "the fixed morally binding customs of a group", may or may not pass through the filter of God's principles.  It is here that a Christian leader must take care to not only see, but proclaim God's truth.

The second implication of "focus" enters the life and ministry of a missionary when a new convert experiences opposition from family and/or friends. Their new found relationship with God is blurred by distorted commentaries and conflicting views. Fear takes the place of God-given peace. Of the three recent professions of faith in Toledo, two are struggling with just such a battle. It is our hope and prayer to be a blessing to these young Christians as they take their first steps with the Lord. The joy is knowing we have not been blindsided; it is a natural reaction of the unsaved to attack. Our confidence comes from knowing that God has promised to continue working with each of us until the day of Jesus Christ.(Phil. 1:6) Our focus is on HIM.

Please join us in Praise and Thanksgiving for:
  1. ...three recent adult professions of faith: Guillermo, Belén, Isabel.
  2. ...the infection in Larry's right leg has subsided and he is out of the hospital.
  3. ...the many opportunities to witness with Gospel literature and New Testaments the 11 days in the hospital.
  4. ...God's provision of a new meeting place for the Mora mission point.
  5. ...the reorganizing and painting of the church facilities which is finishing up this week.
Please join us in Prayer for:
  1. ...Belén and Isabel as they step out in faith. They are under attack. Please pray.
  2. ...Guillermo, husband of one baptized in2013. Pray for this couple to be bonded at the foot of the cross.
  3. ...those working on the cleaning of the church facilities inside and out. It is a major task.
  4. ...Larry's leg. The infection is not completely under control and needs extra care during the coming days.
  5. ...all those who received Christian literature and a testimony this month. There are many needy.

Philippians 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he who hath begun a good work in  you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

A Peek into the heart and life of a missionary...
Arriving on the field as new missionaries we had elected to do our internship in the metropolitan area of Zaragoza with missionaries seeking to open a new work for the Lord. It was distant from the city and province of God's calling for us, yet His leading was clear.  As our time in Zaragoza was coming to a close, we prayed and worked our way into the new area of ministry in Toledo, realizing that we were moving into frontline missions. Our research had brought us to the conclusion that there were no presently operating evangelical churches in the whole of the province. The opportunities for service were unlimited.

Toledo was still meeting in our home, when we received word that the missionaries in Zaragoza were in need of help to cover the work in the newly formed church while they were away on furlough.  We knew the brethren, had even helped some on their way to God, so we volunteered to help without fully realizing the demands of commitment between two works 7 hours distant. It was on one of those return trips from Zaragoza that our family stopped in a picturesque town along a river to rest and have a picnic. As the family romped and played, I was struck by the magic of the valley setting. The river murmured through the arched buildings of the pueblo and in my heart welled up the words " Clama a mí, y yo te responderé, y te enseñaré cosas grandes y ocultas que tú no conoces." At that moment I was reminded that although I could not see God moving stony hearts or changing the religious landscape of this land, God was (and is) at work.  He was at that moment opening the eyes of my heart to see ministry from His perspective.

Please join us in Praise and Thanksgiving for:
  1. ...God's confirmation of His leading by bringing unsaved visitors for the first two meetings of the Sonseca mission point.
  2. ...the Escalona outreach.  We have had two profitable meetings with the point family. Praying for the salvation of Rafa.
  3. ...the good board meetings held during February.
  4. ...the continuing mission-wide prayer initiative. Dave Earley's book, The 21 Most Effective Prayers of the Bibleis being a huge blessing.
  5. ...Larry, as he is recovering gradually from his broken ribs, and he has suffered no damage to internal organs.
Please join us in Prayer for:
  1. ...the advancement of the Mora mission point.
  2. ...the beginning stages of the mission points of Sonseca and Escalona, while praying for God's direction, timing and wisdom to move into any other areas of the province.
  3. ...Larry's continued recovery as he carries on with the ministry at hand.
  4. ...several unsaved in the valley of decision: Rafa, Eduardo, Remedios, Catalina, Dolores, Belén, Victoria, Nico, Diego, Nieves etc.
  5. ...those preparing for baptism this spring and those needing discipleship.

Jeremias 33:3 Clama a mí, y yo te responderé, y te enseñaré cosas grandes y ocultas que tú no conoces.

Jeremiah 33:3  Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

A Peek into the heart and life of a missionary...
A young pre-field missionary was sharing in her blog that while traveling through aroma-therapy God taught her a great lesson as a young mother. "True joy comes from satisfaction in Jesus Christ, not our health, not our circumstances, and certainly not powerful perfume." As an older missionary, I was delighted to see her insight into a truth that would help her on the difficult field of Spain. I wrote her back encouraging her to keep that focus while paralleling her thoughts to the mission field saying, "It is not about results or our own ministry plans.  It is about Christ the Hope for us all."  Continuing to share I recounted,  "I remember back a number of years when I saw an ad in a Christian magazine for a book with a picture of a lady with a crazy hat on her head.  The subtitle read something like when tough times come put a flower in your hat and keep going.  At the time I thought, well, the Spanish don't wear hats, but I have my flower pots in the windows of our home, I'll just look at them to remind me. About two weeks later a hard frost hit and froze all my window boxes.  I too was reminded that God does not share His glory...our focus is to be on Him. That's where the rest and longevity in mission work comes.  Even as a child, a "baby" work meant to grow into a church someday can bring unbelievable stress. Even as everyone "knows" what you should be doing with your child so too come folks who have all the church planting answers whether they have ever planted a church or not." The closing words of encouragement were,  "God has given you a MAJOR truth that will help you as you arrive on the field.  Hold on to HIM.  HE IS THE ANSWER."  For all of us...true satisfaction, rest, and longevity in whatever calling depends upon our focus.

Please join us in Praise and Thanksgiving for:
  1. ...the two believers in Sonseca wanting to start meeting regularly. The plan is to begin outreach.
  2. ...being able to get more evangelistic pamphlets.
  3. ...the two women saved this summer living in other areas.  In talking with them by phone, we have found them continuing in the Word and attending a church.
  4. ...the Lord enabling us to be able to repair the moisture problem in our storage area under the porch.
  5. ...the Lord's enabling with all the paper work this time of year.
Please join us in Prayer for:
  1. ...Sonseca (40 minutes south of Toledo) and the area around it.
  2. ...Escalona (50K north of Toledo in the mountains). We have approached a family there concerning an outreach. Praying.
  3. ...the pastoral leadership meeting of Castilla-LaMancha on February 4th.
  4. ...an important Child Evangelism National Board meeting on February 15th.
  5. ...our mission-wide prayer initiative beginning February 3rd based around Ps. 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations." We will be using Dave Earley’s book, The 21 Most Effective Prayers of the Bible as a guide during the 15 weeks. Pray that God will work both in and through us.

2 Corinthians 5:7  For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Each year for many years we have sought to report from the

field with a fresh perspective, choosing a theme to relate to the various aspects of

the ministry. Looking into 2014, we had hoped to develop and utilize an improved

online system. Prayer and investigation has lead us to realize we must

do "something" now until the "new" is perfected. Only typing the

numerous addresses into the new system is a major undertaking preventing us from

keeping you informed. Therefore, although we have not given up the quest, we are

for the moment returning to the familiar. In a similar fashion so much in a

missionary's life comes from the art of praying, watching and learning with a heart

sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit inorder to improve service to the King of

Kings.

Please join us in Praise and Thanksgiving for:

1. ...God’s direction with the planning and presentation of the evangelistic Christmas

program. It was a beautiful Gospel presentation to a full auditorium.

2. ...the help to find churches for two women recently saved returning to their home

areas, plus a church for a collage girl studying in Germany.

3. ...the new couple working with the children’s class.

4. ...the faithful as well as the new ones coming to the mission point in Mora.

5. ...God’s gift of spiritual “sight” for what really matters.

Please join us in Prayer for:

1. ...God to use the many “Know the King” booklets passed out the night of the

traditional king’s parade January 5th. “Reyes” is the night Spanish tradition

teaches the three wisemen/kings leave presents on their way to see the King of

Kings.

2. ...wisdom in opening a new mission point in 2014. There are many who travel

long distances to attend church, and many unsaved have no church in their area

of the province.

3. ...the continuing discipleship classes. Pray also for the translation of the

leadership notes.

4. ...the men’s Bible institute class that meets Saturday afternoons.

5. ...a worldwide church with a vision to be committed to the ETERNAL in 2014.

God’s vision to be our vision.

WHILE WE LOOK NOT AT THE THINGS WHICH ARE SEEN, BUT AT THE THINGS WHICH ARE NOT SEEN; FOR THE

THINGS WHICH ARE SEEN ARE TEMPORAL, BUT THE THINGS WHICH ARE NOT SEEN ARE ETERNAL.

December 2013

And the seed fell to good ground...
All too many times we hesitate to witness thinking we will do something wrong or make a major mistake when in reality the biggest mistake we can make is to not witness at all.  The Lord promises to take even our weakest efforts and transform them through His power.  For when in our weakness, we cry out to the Lord for help, He steps in to meet the need.  Lotty flew hundreds of miles to be with her sister Gloria during a particular trying time.  When Lotty arrived she grabbed her sister, took her aside, and told her she needed to pray the sinner's prayer.  Gloria said she thought, ok, I'll do anything to keep her from nagging and anyway our brothers need this and I don't want to discourage her.  You would think, "how horrible no one should ever do such a thing".  Yet God used that encounter to start Gloria attending a church in the neighborhood.  Within a short time she recognized her need for true repentance and commitment.  What Gloria had thought she didn't need was the answer she was looking for.  She goes on to say that she had thought herself better then the rest of the family, while the other unsaved relatives were taking bets on how long her "new found faith" would last.  Today Gloria is praising God for being at her side through her baptism and many trials that have continued.  She asks for prayer while in the same breath quotes 2nd Timothy 1:7 and 1st John 4:4.  Those verses are good for us all especially as we consider witnessing to those around us.

Please join us in Praise and thanksgiving for:
  1. .. God's help and direction in testing.
  2. ...the profession of faith of Sandra's mother before returning to Argentina Friday.
  3. ...the couple who came forward to work with the children in Sunday School and the veteran couple who is willing to work with them and help them make the transition.
  4. ...those faithful in memorizing their portion of the evangelistic Christmas program.
  5. ...help to get to and from the airport for our travel to the Western European Mission conference which begins tomorrow.

Please join us in Prayer for:
  1. ...those experiencing testing at this time, especially the recently baptized.  May we all come through like gold as mentioned in 1st Peter.
  2. ...the efforts being made to find a good Gospel preaching church in Argentina for Sandra's mother.
  3. ...the transitions needed and in process for the children and junior high groups.
  4. ...the presentation and attendance of the Christmas Evangelistic program schedule for December 22.
  5. ...mission points and projected mission points of the province of Toledo.
  6. ...the many opportunities to witness during the special holiday season through New Years.  May God give us grace to use every opportunity wisely.

I Corinthians 15:58  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
